Panelisation before layout is frozen

Decide how the board will be panelised while the outline can still move. A 3 mm change to the board edge can be the difference between four-up and six-up on the same panel — and that difference goes straight into your unit cost for the life of the product.

Ask for the panel drawing at the same time as the first quote, not after the Gerbers are released.

Component spacing near tall parts

Placement rules look fine on screen and fail at the nozzle. Tall electrolytics, shielding cans and connectors need clearance for the placement head and for rework tooling. If a fine-pitch part sits in the shadow of a can, the first repair will cost more than the part.

Thermal balance around large ground pads

Uneven copper pulls heat away from one side of a joint and tombstones small passives. Thermal relief on through-hole pads connected to large planes is the standard fix, and it is trivial before fabrication and impossible after.

Test access designed in, not bolted on

In-circuit and flying-probe test need probe points with real clearance, on one side of the board where possible. Retro-fitting test access after layout usually means either a more expensive fixture or accepting lower coverage — and lower coverage means field failures.

Fiducials and polarity marks that survive assembly

Global and local fiducials placed where a solder mask edge or a connector body will not obscure them, and polarity marks that remain visible after the part is placed. Both are free at layout stage and both save operator errors at inspection.

Moisture-sensitive parts and the reflow profile

MSL 3 and above parts need controlled floor time and a bake schedule. Flag them on the BOM so the factory plans for them rather than discovering them on the line.
